Brayards Estate People's Health Trust Project

Brayards Estate TRA (BETRA) was awarded a £6300 grant from The People's Health Trust. With this money BETRA plan to install a greenhouse in Brayards Estate community garden, Peckham and run 26 gardening / nature focused activities. The greenhouse will be used both for project/ future workshops and also in the long term for growing plants for Brayard Estate allotment area, community garden and other estate green spaces. The workshops shall focus on working with local young people and will help them connect to nature / growing plants. We shall run 26 workshops with a mixture of workshops focusing on nature including craft activities, creating bug hotels, planting, pruning, insect hunts, and harvesting fruit / vegetables.

The project workshops shall help us encourage local people to use their new community spaces more often and to encourage more regular volunteering to enable Brayards Estate TRA to better manage these community green spaces. Therefore connecting urban people especially young people with nature and green spaces. We have already had interest from local primary and secondary schools regarding involving their students in gardening / nature activities at Brayards Estate and this project would help us make stronger links with these schools.

Through the acquirement of a new greenhouse we shall be better equipped to grow more and a larger variety organic fruit and vegetables for local people. The greenhouse shall also be used to grow flowers to transform areas of the estate into colourful displays at minimal expense. The workshops shall help to connect the local young people to growing / nature and encourage them to take a long commitment to look after these community green spaces.
