Mayor hosts Southwark’s largest ever charity ball

Over 500 people came out to support Southwark’s Charity Ball last Saturday in aid of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2014-2015 for The Robes Project and UK Homes 4 Heroes. Hosted by The Worshipful Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Sunil Chopra, the event was a huge success and the largest Southwark Charity Ball to date.

The Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2014-2015 is currently on target to raise over £70,000, the largest amount ever raised in a mayoral charity appeal in Southwark.

Councillor Sunil Chopra said, “I am delighted that my Charity Ball was such a success. These are two charities that are very close to my heart and we must always be mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve London’s most historic borough as Mayor and First Citizen and the fact that have we have raised so much money to help the homeless is my proudest achievement”.

The Charity Ball was held at the Guoman Tower Hotel, Tower Bridge, London, on Saturday 9 May 2015 from 6pm to 1am. Guests enjoyed an Indian banquet meal and world class Bollywood entertainment. Punjabi singing sensation Akhil Raj Banga, gave his first UK performance at the event travelling all the way from India to support the cause.

Speech by Councillor Veronica Ward Volunteer 2012 Reunion at Millwall FC on Tuesday 17th September

Thank you to Millwall for hosting such a wonderful event celebrating the many volunteers in Southwark.  I was recently talking to an Paralympic sportsman and said rather than use the word "legacy" we should use the work Olympic "momemtum". We must go forward with the spirit of 2012 and build on it.  Volunteers made London 2012 because the everyone who came to London experienced a very friendly atmosphere - volunteers meant the games were accessible, easy to get to and stress free.  Southwark was one of the Boroughs in London that contributed the most volunteers to the Games:  To Gamesmakers and London Ambassadors.  We also asked for our own volunteers for Southwark to help with the Torch Relay and Para Relay.  Well over a 1000 people enjoyed Olympic related volunteering opportunities here in Southwark.  Tremendous response.

We have also as a Council committed £2m to 10 Capital Olympic Legacy sports facilities - contribution to the wonderful new BMX track, work at the Herne Hill velodrome,Camberwell Leisure Sports Hall and more.

We know that the success of sport in Southwark depends on volunteers - all the Sports CLubs have volunteers out evenings and weekends year in and year our.  We have about 700 charities in Southwark and all of them rely on volunteers as well as the T&RAs - to support community centres,  youth centres, advice centres and specialist support.  Volunteers support the Council around work with young people, in Libraries and in Parks.

Being a volunteer is much more than being about "helping out"/"helping hand"  This is about the community being involved in the life of the Borough and understanding how we all work together and are dependent on each other.

We also have agreed a Volunteer Strategy which defines volunteering - in brief this is time freely given to support the community and meet needs in the community.  The Strategy is a set of action points which we will work through with the Volunteer Centre. I must pay tribute to the huge amount of work the Volunteer Centre, based in the shopping Centre in the Elephant and Castle, carried out by the centre finding, training, finding placements for everyone who comes along and wants to volunteer.

Our action plan includes ways of promoting volunteering, helping organisations to support volunteers, creating more volunteering opportunities and ways of breaking down barriers to volunteering.

Finally thank you thank you thank you to all of you here today who volunteered in 2012.  It is great to see you.  Enjoy the match and thank you to Millwall

Labour Member South Camberwell
Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure,
Sport,Olympic Legacy and Volunteering

CORPORATE VOLUNTEER DAY AT BRAYARDS
On Wednesday 21st August 2013, thirteen volunteers from Ernst & Young spent a day at Brayards Estate in Peckham helping out. . The volunteers have been organised by charity Community Service Volunteers (CSV) and our partners Embrace, Embrace staff & BETRA volunteers helped supervise the day.

The volunteers did a great job. They scrubbed the seating area and varnished it, fitted the benches and shelves to the greenhouse. Painted the entire community garden wall white after brushing it down chopping down the ivy bush that was hanging down the wall. The whole  area has opened up with its painted white wall removal of wood and sheds to a another part of the garden. They set up a garden swing seat and the allotment area was weeded, swept clean, all rubbish removed and beds were dug over. They also painted part of the metal railings around the estate and even pruned the wildlife hedge.
